After spending a few days in the touristic spots of Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang, and getting tired of vodka buckets and drunk teenagers, me and three friends (2 Swiss, a Dutch and an Australian guy) decided to head out for an adventure in the Phongsali province in the remote north of Laos, close to the Chinese border: We decided to go trekking to a remote Akha minority hilltribe village and experience a trip back in time.

To reach the provincial capital Phongsali, we had to travel on two different buses for two full days from Luang Prabang. The buses were very crowded, as you would expect most local long distance buses in South East Asia to be. On the second day, we had to stop for over an hour to replace a tire. Later on, there was problem with the engine and we reached our destination after over 10 hours, eventually driving at walking speed.
